Building a Landing Page for Google Ads

Most small businesses opening a Google Ads account send their ads to the home page. It seems logical; the site is already there. But someone in Izmir searching for air conditioner servicing who clicks your ad lands on the company's founding story, five different services and a slideshow. By the time they find the AC maintenance price and the phone number, their patience has run out.

A landing page built for the ad shows that visitor the continuation of what they clicked. You often feel the difference in both conversion rate and ad cost.

The cost of sending ads to the home page

The first cost is lost customers. The home page is written for everyone; an ad answers a specific search and a specific need. The visitor has to bridge the gap themselves, and most don't; they hit the back button.

The second cost shows up in click prices. Google calculates a Quality Score based on how relevant your ad is, and one component is landing page experience. A low Quality Score can mean paying more per click to reach the same position. So an ad pointing to the home page can bring fewer customers and cost more per click.

A hypothetical calculation: with a monthly ad budget of 10,000 TL at 10 TL per click, you get 1,000 clicks. If the home page converts at 2 percent, you get 20 leads at 500 TL each. If a focused landing page lifts that to 5 percent, you get 50 leads at 200 TL each. Same budget, two and a half times the result. These figures are only an example; rates vary a lot by sector, but the logic holds everywhere.

Message match

The most important rule of a landing page: what the ad promises must appear on the page's first screen.

If your ad headline is Same-Day AC Maintenance, Kadıköy, the page's main headline should say the same. If the ad says from 1,500 TL, the page should show that same figure. The visitor should know instantly that they are in the right place, without having to keep searching. Make sure the promise in the ad is real and one you can keep; don't advertise a price or timeframe the page can't back up.

That is why one landing page can't serve every ad. One page per ad group is a good target. If AC maintenance, AC installation and boiler servicing are three ad groups, they should have three pages. These pages can come from the same template, with the headline, main image, price information and FAQ changing. That way, costs don't multiply.

The first screen needs a plain headline, a sentence or two of explanation, the main action button or a short form, and a trust element. That trust element can be your Google review rating, the area you serve or your warranty terms. Menus, blog links and social icons distract visitors; removing or minimising them on a landing page is a common approach.

Keep the form short. Name, phone and one dropdown are enough for most services. Every extra field can reduce completions. On mobile, the phone number must be callable with a single tap; in many sectors a large share of ad clicks come from phones.

We explained the general idea of a landing page and why it should be a separate page in our article on what a landing page is.

Quality Score and page experience

In Google Ads, Quality Score is a value from 1 to 10 made of three components: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Each is shown as Above average, Average or Below average. Add these columns to your keywords table to see your own scores.

The main factors in landing page experience are content relevant to the search, fast loading on mobile, easy navigation and transparent information. Transparency comes from things like contact details, prices or what prices depend on, and a privacy policy.

Speed matters especially on ad pages. The visitor is already looking for something and is impatient. Large slideshow images, autoplay videos and lots of third-party scripts slow the page down. A single landing page becoming usable on mobile within 2 to 3 seconds is a realistic target.

Setting up conversion tracking

Without conversion tracking, Google Ads is flying blind. You can't tell which keyword or ad brings customers, and Google's automated bidding strategies don't work well without data.

Actions to track are usually form submissions, clicks on the phone number, clicks on the WhatsApp button and, in e-commerce, purchases. Setup uses the Google tag or Google Tag Manager. Importing conversions defined in GA4 into Google Ads is another option. Because tracking codes use cookies and personal data, set them up together with cookie consent and a privacy notice.

The most reliable way to measure form submissions is to show a separate thank-you page after the form is sent and tie the conversion to that page view. Counting button clicks alone also counts failed or incomplete submissions.

After setup, send a test form yourself and check that the conversion appears in Google Ads within a few hours. A situation we see often: accounts that have advertised for months with a conversions column stuck at zero. The ads are assumed not to work, when in fact they are simply not being measured.

A/B test ideas

With enough traffic, comparing two versions of a page lets you decide with data rather than guesses. Google Ads' Experiments feature can split traffic between two pages.

Things worth testing:

  • The main headline: price-led or speed-led? For example, AC Maintenance from 1,500 TL versus Call Today, We Come Tomorrow.
  • A form, or a direct call button?
  • The number of form fields.
  • Review rating or warranty as the trust element?
  • Showing prices or not?

Change one thing at a time, or you won't know what caused the difference. In small-budget accounts, each version needs at least a few hundred clicks for a meaningful result; on an account getting 300 clicks a month, a test running several weeks is normal.

We discussed what a dedicated ad page costs in our article on landing page pricing. If you have several ad groups, ask separately at the quote stage about the price of extra pages derived from the same template. If you already run ads, start by opening the page your highest-spending ad group points to and placing it next to the ad text. Do they say the same thing?

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a landing page need to be indexed by search engines?

Not necessarily. Ad pages often carry content very similar to other pages, so they are commonly kept out of the index with noindex. This doesn't stop Google Ads from evaluating the page.

If my Quality Score is low, what should I change first?

See which component is Below average. If landing page experience is low, improve message match and mobile speed; if ad relevance is low, split keywords into narrower ad groups.
